Standout Films Document Women and What Happens to Them at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival
Great stories are timeless. It’s the theme of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Five films in particular struck a chord that resonated with the theme. This year’s films standout films share this: “It’s the story of a woman And this is what happens to her.” And “It’s the story of all women. And this is their plight.” It’s the story of a black woman in Los Angeles. A Turkish woman in Germany. A Chinese woman in New York City. (Lucky Grandma.) Single women In China. NFL cheerleaders. What’s the resolution? A death. Acceptance. A move out of the country. A move backwards in time to a familiar past. Which of these 5 movies can an American woman relate to? Which scenario is most likely to happen to her? Even if you do the math: How many single women are there in China. How many honor killings happen in the world. It happens in the U.S. How many women go away for the weekend with their ex boyfriend and his new girlfriend. (The Weekend with Sasheer Zamata). How many women are paid less than a man doing the same job and don’t feel their work is valued; are taken advantage of? A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem documents the NFL’s attitude that its cheerleaders should be grateful to be selected to work for less than minimum wage. Never will I look at my guilty pleasure the reality TV show, “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team” the same way. Leftover Women follows several professional women fighting society’s and family pressures to quickly marry. A Regular Woman is the real-life story of Hatun “Aynur” Sürücü a young Turkish woman and mother who was murdered by her youngest brother in an honor killing for having dared to leave a man who abused her. Catch these 5 films at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Now through May 5th. https://www.tribecafilm.com/festival. Depart stunned. Depart crying. Depart uplifted. The most hopeful statement is uttered in Leftover Women. “Water flows and a channel is formed.”
