Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month With Authenticity
Hispanic Heritage Month is a key opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate Hispanic achievements and cultural contributions to U.S. history. Among other aspects, the Hispanic demographic takes pride in expressing oneself through cultural traits, family traditions, decorations, and delicious foods. The Hispanic segment welcomes brands to partake in the festivities and observance of Hispanic Heritage Month. However, it is imperative that brands take time and understand this invitation. Very few Hispanics want brands to refrain from recognizing the Month in their advertisements, but marketers must be wise about participating. Hispanic consumers ask that brands go beyond performative advertising and commercials. Brands must make certain they are educated on Hispanic Heritage, and only then can they celebrate the Month in an authentic manner. Ads should spotlight diversity within the Hispanic community, make note of Hispanic people who have impacted the U.S., and commemorate and teach about Hispanic culture. Explore our insights for celebrating Hispanic culture throughout the month and year round. Sign up for our newsletter to access the recording from our Hispanic Heritage Month panel with U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, Comcast and Proctor & Gamble. HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH: Capturing Hispanics Hearts, Minds and Wallets
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates Hispanic Americans’ rich diversity, histories, impact, and contributions to the economy, pop culture, shaping trends and all aspects of America today and its rich past. Initiated in 1968 as a week-long event by President L. B. Johnson, HHM was extended to a month-long celebration in 1988 by Ronald Reagan. The Hispanic community, 63M strong with $2.5T buying power, is varied in cultural origin representing over 25 countries across Latin America, the Caribbean and Mexico, the largest group by far. Those differences are reflected in varied traditions, content preferences, food style, and even sports or music, but Hispanics are united in their core values, work ethic, codes, optimism, resilience, Familismo and collectivity – and their love of America, which is higher than any other group, befitting the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month.
