We write about destinations that interest multicultural travelers or have outreach campaigns to travelers of Hispanic, African American, Asian American and other cultural backgrounds; women; LGBT travelers and people with disabilities.
Multicultural Travel News is also written for leisure and business travelers looking for what to see and do and for marketing executives interested in ideas, best practices and the business case for targeting so-called "minority" travelers. KILTR Brings Together the Scottish Diaspora Online

KILTR, online networking site for Scots worldwide, was launched in December 2010 for business professionals of Scottish descent. KILTR brings together 40 million Scots worldwide to network online and tap into the vast knowledge, experience and opportunity offered by the Scottish community, which is renowned as canny and entrepreneurial in business. Unlike other social networks, where people may find themselves connected to strangers with no common interests, KILTR uses a built-in search and recommendation engine that pushes relevant opportunities to the users. The site is focused on delivering valuable business and networking opportunities to members. Professionals, entrepreneurs, companies, organizations, clubs and societies can immediately get started networking with others who have a known shared connection or affinity for Scotland. KILTR CEO and co-founder Brian Hughes Halferty hatched the idea for the network during a trip United States. As soon as he began speaking with his Scottish lilt, he noticed how many people claimed a connection with Scotland, whether through direct heritage or simply love of the culture. That connection gave them an immediate bond. "Diaspora networks ¬ groups of expatriates devoted to their culture and heritage ¬are incredibly powerful for fostering business growth across global communities as well as back in the home country," Hughes Halferty says. The interface also supports complex functions such as contextual posts, attachments in conversation replies, embedded multimedia and links, and tagging of post types for a specific user, group or organization. Chinese New Year at Bellagio's Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

Bellagio's Conservatory & Botanical Gardens in Las Vegas celebrated Chinese New Year - Year of the Rabbit, with a unique display replete with symbolic meaning and tradition.  A serene sanctuary guided by the ancient practice of Feng Shui - the art of using surroundings to attract harmony, balance and positive life energy - is on display through March 5. The majestic centerpiece of this exhibit is a 35-foot Chinese Junk Boat with a 38-foot mast inspired by traditional 15th century fishing vessels. Nearby, a 12-foot rabbit with a luxurious coat comprised of more than 4,500 live sedge plants, watches over eight babies at play within a forest of bamboo trees and Taihu rocks.  Stones are viewed as essential features of any traditional Chinese garden and symbolize the larger world around us. Just steps away from Bellagio's furry fortune ambassadors, an 18-foot-tall Chinese God of Prosperity is found amidst gold leafed I-Ching coins, a traditional Chinese money symbol. Celebrating one of the greatest archaeological finds in history and appearing for the first time in the Conservatory are seven replica Terracotta Warriors, covered in crushed walnuts and ground carrot seeds, accompanied by a horse-drawn carriage. The teachings of Feng Shui also are used to position the flow of water into Bellagio's Conservatory, and not away, ensuring the flow of positive energy.  Oversized red silk Chinese lanterns throughout the Conservatory add to the auspicious nature of this spectacular exhibit. Legend has it that Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year.  Twelve came.  The fourth animal in the Asian zodiac, the rabbit serves as a symbol of fortune and longevity.  Those born in the Year of the Rabbit tend to be lucky, articulate and ambitious. African American Travelers Follow Civil Rights Movement

A new poll suggests cultural heritage plays a key role when it comes to destination selection for African Americans travelers, with more than one-third "very likely" to take a trip where stories and sites related to Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement are available.  The African American Traveler study, released by Washington, D.C.-based Mandala Research, outlines the travel habits and preferences of African American travelers, and also suggests a significantly higher percentage of these vacationers would visit more parks if they saw greater diversity among employees and visitors. "We know that some of the travel industry's greatest untapped domestic opportunities involve diverse markets, particularly the African American market," said Laura Mandala, Managing Director of Mandala Research.  "Understanding what motivates this lucrative segment will allow travel providers to refine their marketing and hiring practices, as well as better tailor their products and services." The online study conducted in December queried 1,018 African American leisure travelers who had taken at least one trip within the United States in the past 12 months that was 50+ miles away from home one-way, or where the traveler spent at least one overnight and had shared or sole responsibility for travel planning.  The study was underwritten by the U.S. Cultural and Heritage Tourism Marketing Council and Shop America Alliance, in partnership with Louisiana Travel, Visit Baltimore, The Museum Store, Hester Group, the Center for Socioeconomic Research and Education at Texas A&M, and The Henry Ford. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to Open World's First Museum Exhibit Women Who Rock

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will open a ground-breaking and provocative new exhibit that will illustrate the important roles women have played in rock and roll, from its inception through today. Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power will highlight the flashpoints, the firsts, the best, the celebrated and sometimes lesser-known women who moved rock and roll music and American culture forward.The exhibit is sponsored by PNC and Time Warner Cable. Women Who Rock will open to the public on Friday, May 13, 2011. To kick off the exhibit's opening weekend on Saturday, May 14, the Museum's annual It's Only Rock and Roll Spring Benefit Concert will feature an all-star lineup including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Wanda Jackson and Cyndi Lauper, both featured in the Women Who Rock exhibit. Additional artists will be announced in the coming weeks. The exhibition will spotlight more than 60 artists and fill two entire floors of the museum. The exhibit will feature artifacts, video and listening stations, as well as a recording booth where visitors can film a short story or moment of inspiration related to women in rock. "This exhibit is going to illustrate the vital role women played in shaping the evolution of rock and roll," said Jim Henke, vice president of exhibitions and curatorial affairs for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Women Who Rock will highlight the female spirit as the engine of creation and change in the music. Women Who Rock exhibit eras include: Suffragettes to Juke-Joint Mamas, Will You Love Me Tomorrow: The Early 1960s / Girl Groups, I Will Survive: The 1970s - Rockers to Disco Divas and Causing a Commotion: Madonna and the Pop Explosion. NYC & Company Highlights Harlem during Black History Month with Destination: Harlem

This winter, NYC & Company, New York City's tourism, marketing, and partnership organization, encourages New Yorkers and visitors alike to visit Harlem. NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta announced the grand opening of the Aloft Harlem hotel and NYC & Company's latest promotional campaign, Destination: Harlem. Aloft Harlem is the first new hotel to open in the neighborhood since 1967 and is located in close vicinity to many of Harlem's most popular attractions. Destination: Harlem runs through February 28 and highlights special events at cultural institutions throughout Harlem. The institutions include Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Dwyer Cultural Center, the Harlem Stage, Shrine World Music Venue, El Museo del Barrio and the Apollo Theater. Historic Richmond Region Honors Black History Month

The Richmond Region commemorates Black History Month with special exhibits, unique guided tours and new exhibits that encourage visitors to delve into the past and learn from our ancestors. The events include:
•    Pearls of Wisdom: Black Families and the Nobility of Everyday Living at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia (Feb. 4-July 1) - The exhibit celebrates the wisdom in black families that has been passed down through generations, as well as the new wisdom that comes from living in a fast-paced, highly technological society. Greensboro, NC Celebrates Black History Month

Greensboro, NC has a variety of ways to celebrate the ongoing Black History Month including the following significant African-American historical attractions:
•    Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum, the only state-supported historic site to recognize a woman and one of the first to honor an African American (
•    Mendenhall Plantation, which includes one of two existing false-bottom wagons used to transport runaway slaves during the time of the Underground Railroad (
•    February One Monument (statue of the "Greensboro Four"), a statue commemorating the A&T Four on the A&T campus, Ezell Blair, Jr. (Jibreel Khazan), Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil & David Richmond who on February 1st, 1960 in Greensboro walked downtown and "sat - in" at the whites - only lunch counter at Woolworth's. They refused to leave when denied service and stayed until the store closed. (
