The “why” of marketing to black consumers is easy for marketers to understand.  These 40 million multicultural consumers are approaching 14 percent of the U.S. population and, for the most part, speak English, with some French and Spanish speakers. They skew younger (40-years-old   as opposed to 45) than the total population.  They are making “a dramatic advancement” in education says the University of Georgia’s  Selig Center for Economic Growth, with a 20 percent college completion rate in 2008.  They are concentrated in urban areas and select states, (54 percent in the South) which makes for readily accessible target marketing. They frequently purchase premium priced goods and tend to be brand loyal. Black consumers will have over a trillion dollars  in buying power in 2014. (  Read more >>

E-Tech: Financial Opportunities for the Hispanic Consumer

Hispanic Heritage Month is just around the corner and  being celebrated nationwide beginning on September 15, 2010, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico achieved independence on September 16th and Chile on September 18th. Financial Opportunities for the Hispanic Consumer Some U.S. banks and insurance companies, unlike many media and grocery businesses have limited marketing their products and services specifically to Hispanic consumers. This may have made sense in the past, since the majority of the 45 million + Hispanics who live in the United States typically spend less than the average U.S. consumer on financial services but more on groceries and Spanish-language media. Sidestepping the Hispanic market made sense to financial institutions, until now.  Read more >>

Dr. R. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr. Takes the Diversity Management Discussion to the Next Level in His Latest Book: 'World Class Diversity Management: A Strategic Approach'

Dr. R. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr., President and CEO of Roosevelt Thomas Consulting & Training and founder of the American Institute for Managing Diversity, is acknowledged by many as the foremost thought leader in the field of diversity. In his seventh and most recent book, World Class Diversity Management: A Strategic Approach, he takes a more universal look at diversity management and how it applies to companies, organizations, communities, and even families. “I define World Class Diversity Management (WCDM) as the capability to make quality decisions in the midst of any diversity mixture, in any diversity setting, and in any geographical location,” said Dr. Thomas. “WCDM is a universal diversity management capability. The current tendency is to see “domestic” and “global” efforts as being separate and distinct. I contend that there is a universal lens we can look through to make quality decisions in the midst of any set of differences and similarities and related tensions and complexities.”  Read more >>
