A New Documentary by Cowgirl Films Implores Women to Get Real

The feature-length film Get Real! Wise Women Speak features extraordinary women talking about what it means to age wisely

Director / Producer Joni Steele Kimberlin (PBS’s Elizabeth Winthrop: All the Days of Her Life) is in post-production on the film Get Real! Wise Women Speak, a feature-length documentary that features extraordinary women who are using their time and talent to benefit the world.  Nobel laureates, indigenous elders, artists, grandmothers, scientists, activists, and educators speak about their journey to the wise woman years and the inner fire that propels them to make the most of their wisdom and experience.

The film features a diverse group of women including:
Poet Nikki Giovanni
Nobel Laureate Jody Williams
Actress Jane Fonda
Entertainer Della Reese
Editor Susan L. Taylor
Author Marianne Williamson
Buddhist nun Tenzin Palmo
Oceanographer Sylvia Earle
Artist Martha Jackson-Jarvis.

Also featured are Floredemayo and Agnes Baker Pilgrim, both of the Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers.  Floredemayo is of Mayan descent and Pilgrim is an elder of Oregon’s Federated Tribes of Siletz.

The film has recently been honored with an Award of Excellence by the Accolade Competition and has been chosen as an official selection by several film festivals, including Atlanta, New York’s Soho International, Sacramento and Miami’s Women’s International.

Kimberlin traveled across the US, London and India to interview these women.  Get Real! Wise Women Speak has been a labor love for its producer / director.  “Approximately sixty million American women are over the age of fifty,” says Kimberlin.  “Growing older can be an adventure which bestows the freedom to truly become a Wise Woman.  With this documentary I want to celebrate this extraordinary time in a woman’s life and create a counterpoint to the youth-obsessed media that bombards women day after day with superficial and unrealistic images.”

Get Real! Wise Women Speak has nearly 30,000 fans on its Facebook page, which demonstrates the very real nerve the film has struck among people of all ages.  The documentary is a call to action: “Do something with your time, experience and wisdom.”
